Girlvana & Kid’s Yoga

When I first pondered opening up a yoga studio my first reason was because there is such a need to calm and restore the mind.  Our minds are constantly racing about things we need to do, things we have done wrong in the past, things we need to do in the future it’s a wonder we have time to do the things we need to do with all of that mind chatter.  The one place I knew I could go to just focus on me and on the present was to my mat…I then thought where do our children and teens get to go to get this same relief?  As a primary school teacher I see the anxiety, the stress, the need to be perfect and the need to be accepted everyday in students.  Some might argue what do children need to be stressed out or anxious about? The reasons are too many to list!

Then I heard about Girlvana, a program that is about creating a safe space of non-judgement and connection, a safe space where girls can share.  It seems that Girlvana believes that through sharing the girls will be able to see that they are not alone and that they can relate and identify to the other girls in their lives which can be very empowering for girls to experience. Its about learning to accept each other completely, no matter their social interests or popularity, no matter where someone came from, what they look like, or their belief system.

Beyond the benefits of the physical asana practice, Girlvana offers  journaling ,interactive games, questions, and guided meditation at the beginning and at the end of class as a way to facilitate open, honest, real dialoque centered around issues many teen girls face today. Body image, confidence, self-care, inner dialogue, and healthy relationships are just a few of the conversations that can be sparked by a Girlvana lead class.

Annie Robinson and Sara Mercer are both qualified instructors who are regarded highly in their profession and put the interests and needs of their students first..I am very excited to be able to share this amazing program at the studio and wish that I could have had the opportunity to be part of a group like this when I was a teen.
